The patient, Mr. Manan
Sharma, a 21-year-old student, first presented in June 2025 with a short
history of persistent fever and severe fatigue. Preliminary evaluation in Agra
indicated a high suspicion of leukemia, prompting an immediate referral to Max Hospital,
Saket. Upon comprehensive testing done at Max Hospital Saket, he was diagnosed
with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia, an aggressive form of blood cancer that requires
prompt and intensive treatment.
Mr. Sharma was admitted
and placed on immediate supportive care, including antibiotics for persistent
fever. The medical team counselled the family regarding the need for intensive
chemotherapy, following which he underwent induction chemotherapy with the
FLAG-VEN regimen. While he responded positively to treatment, he encountered a
serious infectious complication known as Ludwig’s angina. With appropriate
medical management, he made a full recovery.
Dr. Faran Naim, Senior
Consultant - Hematology & Bone Marrow Transplantation, Max Super Speciality
Hospital, Saket said “Performing a haploidentical transplant requires
meticulous planning and careful management of post-transplant complications.
Manan responded exceptionally well at every stage of treatment. Seeing him
return to a normal life after six months is extremely rewarding. This success
highlights the capability of our team and the advanced BMT infrastructure at
Max Hospital, Saket.”
A repeat evaluation
revealed that the disease had entered remission. However, due to the presence
of high-risk genetic mutations, the treating team advised an allogeneic Bone
Marrow Transplant as the best long-term curative approach. Being the only child,
Manan did not have a matched sibling donor, making a fully matched transplant
impossible. The family was counselled for a haploidentical (half-matched)
transplant using his father as the donor.
Dr. Rayaz Ahmed,
Principal Director - Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplant from Max Super
Speciality Hospital, Saket said / or Dr Faran further added “Manan’s case
reflects how modern advancements in bone marrow transplantation are giving
young patients a second chance at life, even in the absence of fully matched
donors. Haploidentical BMTs allow us to extend curative therapy to families who
otherwise struggle to find a compatible donor. His recovery is a testament to
timely diagnosis, coordinated multidisciplinary care, and the unwavering
strength of the patient and his family.”
Manan underwent a
successful haploidentical BMT at Max Hospital, Saket. The procedure demanded
advanced clinical precision, expert infection control, and continuous
monitoring. Today, six months post-transplant, Manan is leading a normal life,
requires no major medications, and is steadily returning to his routine
activities. His recovery demonstrates how haploidentical transplants are
transforming outcomes for high-risk patients, especially when fully matched
donors are unavailable.
Max Hospital, Saket
continues to be a leading centre for advanced haematology and bone marrow
transplantation, offering cutting-edge treatments that provide renewed hope for
patients with complex blood cancers.
