Walkathon and Free Health checkup camp organized to raise awareness on increasing cardiology issues

Gurugram, 3rd October, 2021: Commemorating the 152nd birth anniversary of our father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, Fortis Hospital, Gurugram organized a full day public awareness event to highlight and raise awareness about the growing incidences of cardiovascular ailments in the country and the need for their prevention.

The event was conducted at Tulip Violet RWA, Gurugram witnessing a huge participation of over 1500 residents from 1100 apartments, following all social distancing norms.

Consisting of a series of activities, the day started at 7:30 AM with a walkathon with participation of over 200 residents. There was proper arrangements for refreshments for all. Other events included health talks, lucky draw games, complimentary heart health screening, drawing competition & magic show for kids and CPR training was also demonstrated to all the residents.

Citing the fact that heart problems have been on an exponential rise during the pandemic even among the younger population, Padma Bhushan Awardee Dr T.S. Kler, Chairman-Fortis Heart & Vascular Institute, Fortis Hospital, Gurugram, highlighted on the dire need for timely and regular health check-up to prevent various heart complications.

“Pertaining to poor and sedentary lifestyle, rise in cardiovascular diseases (CVD) is one of the most alarming non-communicable diseases, causing a high rate of mortality in the country. While most of the Indian population is still unaware about the symptoms of a heart attack, through such public events we would like to take the opportunity to spread awareness on the same. The aim of this event is to make people understand the ways to prevent and survive a heart attack, while healthy diet is one of the main aspects in this, walking, exercising and regular physical activity boosts and keeps your heart healthy,” said Dr TS Kler.

The free super specialty cardiac checkup camp included heart health tests like ECG, Total Cholesterol test & Random Glucose Test, upon which consultation was given by Cardiologist.

While heart attacks were once considered to be a problem of the elderly is gradually falling apart. Increased dependence of the middle-aged population (both men and women) on poor lifestyle habits (smoking, alcoholism, poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyle) are attributing to a higher incidence of premature heart problems. Even though inherited conditions cannot be controlled completely but making changes to the lifestyle choices can make a big difference.

“Brisk walking is one of the best exercises to maintain a healthy heart. It helps in holistic body movement, improving heart health, lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol, countering obesity thereby reducing the risk of high blood pressure, heart attack, diabetes and more. It also promotes general wellness by helping in tackling mental stress and metabolism issues, especially amid this pandemic. Some form of physical activity should be taken up by people. Running or walking being one of the easiest form of exercise, can be done at any time of the day,” added Dr Kler.
